The Estate: Today

2021 - Present

FUTO’s current chapter begins in 2021 and represents the continuing definition of its vineyards, sites, and wine portfolio. The year 2021 realizes the formation of FUTO’s current wine offerings with the introduction of new wines and the further refinement of existing ones. Great wine results from the combination of phenomenal elements–vineyards, property, and the right people to provide vision, excellence, and continuity.

In 2021, Jason Exposto begins his thirteenth year and his twelfth as head winemaker. The value of having the same talented person overseeing and interconnecting viticulture and winemaking for so long cannot be overstated.

Leading the FUTO collection of wines in 2021 are two Cabernet Sauvignons–FUTO Oakville Estate, representing the Oakville site, made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5500, the Cabernet Sauvignon from the property in the Stag’s Leap Appellation. Different in character, the pair of wines articulate the unique personalities and astonishing potential of both vineyards.

A new wine joins the FUTO portfolio. A complex blend based on Cabernet Franc–CFX features the very vines David Abreu recommended be planted on the northernmost site on the Oakville Estate with a north-facing exposure. The Cabernet Franc is supported by Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.

Additionally, in 2021, SETA–a new line featuring a white and a red blend from the fruit of both estates–is introduced. SETA white is a rich, complex Sauvignon Blanc, while SETA red is an elegant blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon.

Finally, the FUTO Blanc continues to expand in vibrance and complexity, a dry, ravishing Sauvignon Blanc made from the highest plantings of the 5500 Estate.

The Wines

2021 - Present
FUTO Oakville Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

FUTO Oakville Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

The combination of the inherent quality of our Oakville site and years of meticulous hillside viticulture has ultimately rendered Cabernet Sauvignon complete enough to carry our flagship wine on its own. Powerful, balanced, and complex, this pure Cabernet Sauvignon expresses the historical and evolving heart of FUTO Estate.

Seamless and opulent, the 2021 FUTO Oakville is a clear expression of this site. Aromatics shimmer between lifted rose petal, lavender and a host of other floral and spice notes. With air and time in the glass, more dark and mysterious fruit layering are introduced. On the palate, expressive savory and floral notes give the sumptuous dark fruit considerable freshness and buoyancy through a soil borne tannin line.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

FUTO 5500

FUTO 5500 Stags Leap District Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Reflecting its rocky volcanic hillside origins, the FUTO 5500 Stags Leap District Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is massively scaled but retains superb purity and energy. A timeless wine that resonates with refinement.

A true wine of place, the 2021 FUTO 5500 is alluring but authoritative. Scents of small dark cherries, Indian ink and lush florals are penetrating while maintaining a sense of space. The palate is harmonious and animated; cassis, dark fleshed fruits and accents of sweet tobacco are lifted by a violet top note. An undertow of svelte, mineral rich tannins build into a fragrant rolling finish.

85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot

FUTO Blanc

FUTO Blanc

A pristine expression of Sauvignon Blanc from our 5500 Estate. Very limited production.

The 2021 FUTO Blanc perfectly highlights the brilliance of this site and season. Seductive scents of white peach, pressed yellow flowers, honeysuckle, and a touch of jasmine are vivid, multidimensional and wonderfully alive. The palate powerful yet at the same time silken, with a rush of citrus, ripe stone fruit, and a touch of seasoned French Oak lending volume and texture. Layers of pure, crystalline minerality linger on the dazzling finish.

100% Sauvignon Blanc, 90 cases bottled June 2022

Golden yellow with a lime tinge, the 2022 FUTO Blanc blossoms in the glass with a display of contrasts. A mineral infused blend of ripe stone fruit, and lemon curd are lifted by sweet white florals and mineral framing. The ’22 finishes long and staining with hints of almond pastry, French oak accents, and contrasting lemon zest.

100% Sauvignon Blanc

FPO

FUTO CFX Estate Red Wine

CFX gives voice to the exceptional, north-facing planting of Cabernet Franc on the Oakville site. In combination with Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the Cabernet Franc-centric wine is incisive with lithe structure and intense aromatics.

Hauntingly dark and floral, the 2021 FUTO CFX is a natural beauty. Lifting from the glass with a blend of foreign spices and incense, dried roses, blood orange, and pepper-tinged wild berry fruits. The palate impression is deeply textural, with velvet waves, and dense upon entry, as layers of black raspberry meld with deeply set floral tones and liquid minerals.

45% Cabernet Franc, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Petit Verdot

FUTO SETA Red Wine

FUTO SETA Red Wine

A blend of grapes from both estates, The SETA Red is a pure expression of our rigorous viticulture and winemaking craft. Though the blend changes subtly from vintage to vintage, it remains primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance divided between Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot.

Crushed blueberries, fresh blackcurrants, and black cherry preserves with an evocative undercurrent of licorice, sandalwood, and clove oil. The full-bodied palate is layered and intense, featuring exquisitely ripe, fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness.

82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot

SETA White Wine

FUTO SETA Sauvignon Blanc

The SETA White is made entirely of Sauvignon Blanc sourced from our two estate vineyards in Oakville and Stags Leap. The complementary nature of the sites yields a voluptuous, complex wine and compelling introduction to FUTO’s white wine making style.

Chalk and crushed rocks open out to a core of ripe pears, yellow apples, and white floral. Superbly silky texture, framing the tight-knit apple and citrus layers, supported by a refreshing backbone of soft acidity.

Sauvignon Blanc, 100% Sauvignon Blanc

The Estate: Chapter Two

2012 - 2020

FUTO’s second chapter is a story of growth and refinement through viticulture and winemaking–the development and honing of the Oakville Estate, the addition of the new property in the Stag's Leap appellation, and the integration and improvement of this property.

The 5500 property in the Stag’s Leap appellation included ten acres of vines planted in the mid-eighties primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon. FUTO planted an additional four acres in 2015 on the crushed bedrock of an upper knoll with a south-eastern exposure, a significant detail considering Stags Leap’s overall western-facing orientation. The majority of the four acres were planted to Cabernet Sauvignon (2.8 acres), but a portion of this outstanding site was dedicated to Sauvignon Blanc (1.2 acres). From the onset with the 2012 vintage, the Stag’s Leap property has yielded a profound Cabernet Sauvignon, which is bottled under the label 5500, a worthy compliment to the Oakville wines.

In 2012, FUTO debuted the wine OV|SL, created to explore the harmonies between the two properties, which sit on opposite sides of the valley. The year 2018 also saw the introduction of FUTO’s first Sauvignon Blanc, a stunning wine farmed with the same meticulous nature as the Cabernet Sauvignon from the new planting on the Stag’s Leap property.

The 2019 vintage marked the first time the FUTO Estate from Oakville was 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, which remains today, as well as the last vintage of OV|SL.

The Wines

2012 - 2020
FUTO OVSL

FUTO OV|SL

The FUTO OV|SL showcases the synergy of our two estate properties. At its core are co fermentations of fruit from these hillsides that we believe are perfect foils for one another. Oakville is imposing and impressive with its broad-shouldered stature, while Stags Leap is a timeless beauty with classic proportions. This wine is proof that 1+1 can equal 3.

The 2012 OV|SL starts floral with chiseled red fruits turning darker with smoky minerals and a savory perfume. Energetic on the palate, flavors are focused on black raspberries and cherries, loamy soil, herbs and tannin that melts into a long, suave finish. Elegant but authoritative, this wine has it all.

75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Petit Verdot, 880 cases bottled May 2014

As powerful and brooding this young wine was from barrel, the 2013 OV|SL has developed exquisite finesse and nuance to play off its natural concentration. Bright floral notes give striking aromatic lift to the rich, sumptuous fruit. Bright red cherry, blood orange, white pepper, and dried flowers build into a resonant, staining finish.

77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, and 4% Cabernet Franc, 559 Cases bottled May 2015

Totally seamless in the glass, the 2014 OV|SL is all about levity. Inky blue/purplish fruit, spice, lavender, and licorice give the 14 its many shades of nuance. But it is the harmony and balance that speaks to the synergy of our two vineyard sites that really elevate the wine into the sublime.

81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, 499 cases bottled June 2016

The wine perfectly captures both, the vintage and the synergy between our two sites. Rose hip, black cherry, and sweet savory aromas point to the natural richness of the year in its amped up expression. On the palate, chiseled cassis, raspberry and violet flavors pulse with energy, onto a layered graphitic infused bed of fine tannin. Even with all of its aromatic and flavor explosiveness, there is a level of translucence and energy that elevate the wine.

68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, 633 cases bottled June 2017

In this vintage, the heart of the final blend was made up of three small co-fermentations, each unique in composition, between our two Estate properties. What we found in this vintage was that Oakville contributed much of the plushness with crystallized purple fruit, and seemingly endless layers. While Stags Leap, with its chiseled florals and complex mineral stain, lend poise and finesse. This mix of fruit and perfume will be a thrill ride either young or old.

71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot, 686 cases bottled July 2018

Deep, sensual, and mysterious, the 2017 FUTO OV|SL embodies the best qualities of the vintage. An exotic mélange of blood orange, sage, mint, sweet rose petal, inky red/purplish fruit come together in a wine that is both rich and remarkably light on its feet. The 17 melds together aromatic intensity with fruit generosity. Leading to a graphite infused, explosive finish of substantial depth and resonance.

62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc, 16% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, 546 cases bottled June 2019

Seamless and rich, the 2018 FUTO OV|SL boasts extraordinary purity and finesse. The flavors are deep and evenly layered throughout. Lavender, mint, violet, licorice and blueberry notes grace the palate, while a host of sweet floral notes and exotic spices are fused into the eternal finish.

66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc, 14% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot, 566 cases bottled July 2020

Vivid purple-hued beauty has a classic OV|SL bouquet of black and blue fruits, crushed violets, chocolate, tobacco, and a hint of white truffle. This carries to a full-bodied, powerful yet exceedingly elegant palate presence, with terrific purity, flawless balance, and silky long tannins.

55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, 16% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot, 860 cases bottled April 2021

FUTO Oakville

FUTO Oakville Estate Red Wine

A complex wine from a complex estate. The FUTO Oakville Estate Red Wine finds its feet with rich, sumptuous Cabernet Sauvignon, but leans heavily on Cabernet Franc for poise and finesse. Petit Verdot is layered in for good measure.

Opaque ruby-purple in color, the 2012 FUTO Oakville radiates complex aromas of lilac, brambly fruit, clove and charcoal. Texturally, this is perhaps the most approachable young FUTO since the 2007. The tannins are perfectly interwoven into the dense core of blackberry and blueberry liqueur along with notes of mocha, truffle and cedar. A full-bodied wine that never gets heavy and finishes with energy and purity. Drink now through 2035.

72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot, 550 cases bottled May 2014

A wine that has an aura, the 2013 FUTO grabs your attention. Incense, lavender, fresh blackberry aromatics are saturating, and constantly change in the glass. The fireworks continue on the palate: as the fruit shimmers between purple and red tinge, allied to deep background echoes of winter savory. The combo of ample suave tannin, purity, and complexity of flavor promise decades of positive evolution.

59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, 500 cases bottled May 2015

The 2014 FUTO is a natural beauty. Aromatics soar from the glass with intense blackberry, cassis, juniper berry and violets that are brilliantly defined and focused. It is almost as if the palate and aromatic senses are as one. With the inner perfume of the wine influencing the mouthfeel, and the aromatics almost washed in sweet and elegant tannin. All of this momentum in the glass promises a thrilling experience now and long into the future.

65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot, 600 cases bottled June 2016

The 2015 FUTO presents a bold sketch of this vintage in Oakville. From the first day in tank, each component of the blend had amplified depth and drive to its structure – in the winery, our only goal was to capture this in bottle. Crème de cassis, wet graphite, spring florals and licorice burst onto the palate in waves. Spectacularly rich and dense, the full and fine tannins are nearly buried underneath the florals and fruit. The settled acidity lifts the finish into a weightless mix of perfume and sweet savory. We believe the 2015 will enjoy an uninterrupted drinking window that will last decades.

71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Merlot, 530 cases bottled June 2017

A wine of pure energy and vitality, the 2016 FUTO Oakville has a sense of total completeness. Deep, and almost opaque in color, the pixelated black fruit, crushed flowers, and dark mineral aromas almost seem to envelop the senses. The palate is full bodied, and possesses superb textural intensity. Black cherry, lavender, spice and blood orange all infuse the mid palate. While the layered tannin, that possesses glacial like purity, draws the finish long and ultra fine.

77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Merlot, 709 cases bottled July 2018

Inky ruby/purple with stunning concentration, the 2017 FUTO is an intense expression of our Oakville property. The extraordinary perfume of graphite, blackberries, cassis, and sweet kirsch are intermixed with hints of incense, spice box, licorice, and subtle wood. The aromas flow onto a multidimensional mouthfeel and fabulous purity of blue, red, and black fruits. The symmetry and palate presence is elevated by velvety tannin, and fresh acidity that draws the finish long and multilayered.

77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 9% Petit Verdot, 1% Merlot, 529 cases bottled June, 2019

Rich and dramatically sweeping in the glass, the 2018 FUTO Oakville is all about purity and power. Creamy and voluptuous, with exceptional balance, the 2018 possesses superb textural intensity allied to soaring aromatics. Rose petal, red cherry, lavender, blood orange and wildflowers all build through the mid palate, while structurally the combination of powdery tannin, mineral drive, and perfume saturate the senses.

The 2019 FUTO Oakville reveals an inky purple/blue hue, and a fresh vivid bouquet of creme de cassis, toasted spice, violets, chocolate, and graphite. On the palate there is an interplay of richness and weightlessness. FUTO 5500

FUTO 5500 Stags Leap District Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Reflecting its rocky volcanic hillside origins, the FUTO 5500 Stags Leap District Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is massively scaled but retains superb purity and energy. A timeless wine that resonates with refinement.

An opulent wine with saturated purple color. Pure aromas of black cassis, kirsch, mulberry and violets. A wine of great intensity and presence, but freshness and precision. The oak is nearly all concealed by the fruit which is penetrating and supported by powdery tannins and perfect acidic tension. The finish is complex with an added mineral stain leaving no doubt this wine has the reserves to age for decades.

94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 411 cases bottled May 2014

The unique season in 2013 amplified the site-specific characters of the 5500 Estate. Candied cherry, pomegranate, kirsch, crushed rose petal and violet overtones give a tremendous inner sweetness and captivating perfume. But with the smaller berries of this season, the weight and depth of flavor and structure reach another dimension. The pitch perfect ripeness, combined with an almost mist like coolness will be exciting to watch unfurl over its long life.

92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot

The 2014 FUTO 5500 is as clear as a bell. Vivid aromatics of cherry blossom, raspberry and currents, and a beguiling note of alpine herbs combine in a plush yet dense center. On the palate an amalgam of mixed berries, lavender, and mineral freshness complex through the core of the wine. While the tannin has density and depth, it’s also kind of suede like in its effortless flow and length. The finish ripples with purity, flavor, and freshness.

87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 308 cases bottled June 2017

The Rose oil, Raspberry preserve and host of spring floral aromatics are immediate in expression. Full bodied, very dense, while also lifting into a weightless beam of fresh powdery tannin. The 2016 is unique in the way it seems to constantly change and evolve in the glass between its perfumed, and ample red fruit, and pie crust layering. The mineral core, a signature of the vineyard, frames the palate staining finish.

97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, 457 cases bottled June 2018

A wine of purity displaying a sense of place, the 2017 FUTO 5500 is all about finesse and power. A deep ruby-purple color with aromas of black cherry, violets, tar and smoky minerals. The palate unfolds layer upon layer revealing pure red and blue fruits, complexed with a mineral freshness that runs through the core of the wine. The ample concentration and structure of the wine is pixilated intro a thrilling fabric of fruit and perfume.

86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 387 cases bottled May 2019

The Estate: Chapter One

2002 - 2011

The first decade of FUTO establishes the location and expands its footprint. This era sees the planting of new vineyards and replanting of existing ones, the assembling of a dedicated and talented team–all while producing compelling wines that are, from the outset, well-received critically and commercially.

FUTO Estate began in 2002 with the purchase of Oakford Vineyards, a compact but auspiciously situated property in the western foothills above Oakville, comprising forty acres of varied terrain with approximately seven acres of planted vines. It produced a small but prestigious brand, which developed a loyal following under the winemaking of Bob Levy, Heidi Barrett, Marco DiGiulio, and the vineyard stewardship of the esteemed David Abreu.

Before ever releasing a wine, FUTO purchased an adjoining 120 acres planting around seven of them to Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. In the transition from Oakford Vineyards to FUTO, continuity is vitally maintained via the continuing presence of David Abreu, whose almost preternatural understanding of the site would become integral to FUTO’s growing identity. In 2004, FUTO hired Mark Aubert as founding winemaker. Together, Aubert and Abreu (internally known as the A-Team) oversaw the development of the new property and the replanting of existing vineyards, making inspired decisions that have allowed the wines to both excel and evolve over the ensuing decades.

FUTO’s inaugural estate wine debuts to acclaim in 2004. It is joined in 2005 by OV, a blend named in homage to the original Oakford Vineyards.

In 2008, FUTO conducted harvest in its new winery, designed by the acclaimed architect Howard Backen. That year Jason Exposto was hired as assistant winemaker to Mark Aubert. He took over full-time winemaking duties in November of 2009 and then building upon that foundation, all viticulture responsibilities in 2011. On the last day of 2011 after a six-year search, FUTO purchased an estate in the Stag’s Leap appellation beginning the brand’s next chapter.

The Wines

2002 - 2011
FUTO OV

FUTO OV

OV is our nod to Oakford Vineyards, which once occupied part of the FUTO estate. For two decades Oakford grew and produced wines of character that were true to the property. OV acknowledges this history, the wines and the people behind both. The inaugural vintage, 2005, is a strong compliment to the FUTO. It is well structured and packed with dark cherry and smoky minerality.

Cabernet Sauvignon, 126 cases bottled July 2007

The 2006 OV blend draws its personality from the same sources as it big brother, the FUTO blend. The parallels in aromatics, body and overall intensity of this red blend give our OV the recognizable distinction that is this Oakville estate. Aromatics are vibrant and focused on fresh cherry and red currant layered with exotic spices. These aromatics carry over to the palate. The mouth feel is rich and generous with an abundance of velvety tannin. Matched to the ripe tannin profile, the complexity of this wine evolves further with smoky mineral notes. This red blend is built to improve with bottle aging but will provide an indulgent drinking experience through its youth.

Cabernet Sauvignon, 125 cases bottled August 2008

Strong youthful aromatics of currant, spiced cherry and cedar wood. Flavors take up where the nose leaves off adding blue fruits, baking spice, smoky minerals and a citrus-like complexity. In the mouth the wine is full and rich with layers of sweet tannin and a long savory finish. Drink now for its vibrancy or cellar to your preference as this wine is built to last.

Cabernet Sauvignon, 146 cases bottled July 2009

The 2008 OV sports an inky black color. The nose also reveals this dark density. Cabernet Franc driven aromas of violets and black truffle provide complex counterpoint to black cherry and boysenberry. A deep brambly liqueur-like character dominates the palate, while the nearly 15% Petit Verdot adds white pepper, cocoa powder and ample tannin structure. The sheer extract and size of this wine bode well for long cellar life.

Cabernet Sauvignon, 356 cases bottled June 2010

The purity and volume of aroma is outstanding. Bright red fruits, fine minerals, and savory spice are each well defined but harmonious. Medium+ body with lots of energy on the palate. Cocoa powder-like tannins are sweet and fine adding grip and persistence. Finish is long and silky with great clarity of perfectly ripened fruit.

Cabernet Sauvignon, 512 cases bottled June 2011

Aromas of black cherry, cassis, flowers, licorice and well-seasoned oak. Rich and expressive in the mouth, the fruit character is complimented by mineral and savory elements making the wine inviting. There is enough acidity to keep this intense wine focused. Fine tannins carry the length and provide ample framework for aging and development.

Cabernet Sauvignon, 501 cases bottled June 2012

The 2011 OV opens with pungent tobacco, minerals and savory spice then slowly expands with time to include currants, cherries and floral elements. Full bodied but still showing a refreshing lift indicative of the cool season. Like the nose, the palate continues to change seemingly every minute in the glass. At one moment dark and brooding, the next, fresh and vibrant. The tannins are approachable now but the wine’s ability to evolve in complexity makes this a wine to follow through the years.

41% Cabernet Franc, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, and 13% Petit Verdot, 497 cases bottled May 2013

FUTO Oakville

FUTO Oakville Estate Red Wine

A complex wine from a complex estate. The FUTO Oakville Estate Red Wine finds its feet with rich, sumptuous Cabernet Sauvignon but leans heavily on Cabernet Franc for poise and finesse. Petit Verdot is layered in for good measure.

Our 2004 FUTO is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the two oldest blocks on our estate. It is driven powerfully by an intense expression of our Oakville property. This wine exhibits a plush mouth-feel, with red fruits, baking spice, mature flowers and savory tannins. This wine is by no means for the faint of palate, but with a few years of bottle age, this first effort continues to evolve and evoke a hedonistic experience, something we thoroughly enjoy.

Cabernet Sauvignon, 80 cases bottled July 2006

The intensity and color of the 2005 FUTO is deeply pitched red to black. The wine has vibrant clarity, which is a telltale of a great vintage. Aromatics are also vibrant with a fresh tone of red fruits, specifically cherries and raspberries. The complexity of this wine unfolds further to include earthy, soil-driven notes and exotic spices, such as Tamarind. The mouth feel is pure richness framed by ripe, supple tannins and fine acid structure. This red wine will continue to improve with bottle aging, but drink well near term.

Cabernet Sauvignon, 235 cases bottled July 2007

A wine of purity displaying a sense of place, the 2006 FUTO is a deep ruby-purple color with aromas of black cherry, savory spice, tar, and smoky minerals. The palate is dense and layered with black fruits, licorice, noble tannins and natural acidity. The sweetness of tannin and lushness of fruit create a compelling young wine, though the backbone ensures cellar value.

Cabernet Sauvignon, 425 cases bottled August 2008

A wine of authority and clarity, the 2007 FUTO displays an inky purple hue. A nose of vivid blue fruit, crushed rocks, spring flowers, and cedar. On the palate, the wine reveals layers of depth and extract, with a core of opulent blue and black fruits, licorice and a suggestion of citrus oil. The finish is persistent with mouth-filling tannin complexed with sweet minerality. This vintage, while compelling in its youth, will continue to evolve with extended cellaring.

Cabernet Sauvignon, 374 cases bottled July 2009

The 2008 FUTO is a fruit and liquid-earth emulsion. It leads with heady aromas of dark fruit confections, graphite, violets and incense. The palate is ripe, rich and savory. Flavors focus on blackberry, licorice and cracked pepper. The Cabernet Franc underpinning brings restraint and balance. The ripeness of the vintage will make this wine approachable in its youth, though the ample framework of tannin and acid promises graceful aging.

Cabernet Sauvignon, 321 cases bottled July 2010

The inky purple-colored 2009 FUTO is a formidable wine. Aromas lead off with a liqueur of blueberries and blackberries, creosote and florals. There is sensational richness but plenty of purity. Cabernet Sauvignon flavors dominate in the mouth with cassis, cedar and sweetened coffee. In its youth this wine seems to weave effortlessly between brooding and sensual. The brooding element will likely fade with 3-5 years of bottle age leaving a long-lived sensual beauty.

77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot, 525 cases bottled June 2011

The color of the 2010 FUTO is a fully saturated, glass staining purple-black. Intriguing aromas of mulberry, crushed lavender, black tea and graphite drench the senses. Despite some youthful reticence of flavor it is texturally accessible and magnificently rich. Sweet velvety tannins are seamless and broad as the wine travels across the palate. A striking liqueur-like minerality resonates on the long enticing finish. This combination of complexity, substance and nobility will reward long term aging.

67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Petit Verdot, 460 cases bottled June 2012

This wine’s aroma has it all: plums, incense, tobacco leaf, violets, and exotic spices. Zero racking and extended lees contact has given the 2011 FUTO a satisfying balance of creamy richness and superb freshness. Generous and inviting flavors of black-skinned fruits, cappuccino, citrus and cloves work in harmony with the sweet tannin and well integrated oak. While texturally approachable now, the inner density and complexity of this wine will continue to unfold with cellar age.

74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, 9% Petit Verdot, 6% Merlot, 488 cases bottled May 2013
